What is Acupressure?

Acupressure is a form of acupuncture rooted in ancient Chinese medicine, practiced for over 2,000 years. It’s an excellent option for those who seek the benefits of acupuncture without the needles. According to Chinese medicine, the body has meridians—channels that connect all organs and tissues. These meridians contain acupoints located on the skin's surface. Applying pressure to specific acupoints along these meridians can promote wellness and relieve various symptoms. The choice of meridian and acupoint depends on the symptom you wish to address.

Stimulating a particular acupoint can alleviate pain both locally and in other areas of the body. For instance, the Zhong Zu acupoint, located between the 4th and 5th fingers, can help relieve headaches, upper back tension, and neck and shoulder discomfort.

Three Acupoints to Try:

Tai Chong:
Tai Chong is useful for easing lower back pain, stress, headaches, anxiety, and insomnia. This acupoint is located on the top of the foot, about two finger-widths below where the big toe meets the second toe. Apply firm pressure with your fingers and massage deeply for 4-5 seconds.

Jian Jing:
The Jian Jing acupoint, found on the shoulder, is used to relieve chronic headaches, neck stiffness, and shoulder tension. Pinch the shoulder muscle with your thumb and middle finger, then apply firm, downward pressure with your index finger for 4-5 seconds. Repeat as needed. (Note: This exercise may induce labor; consult your physician before attempting.)

Zhong Zu:
Zhong Zu is effective for treating temporal headaches, upper back pain, and tension in the neck and shoulders. This acupoint is located in the groove between the 4th and 5th fingers, just behind the knuckles. Apply deep, firm pressure for 4-5 seconds and repeat as needed.

How to Do Acupressure Correctly:

To perform acupressure correctly, apply firm pressure to each acupoint, either by yourself or with help. Relaxation is key, so close your eyes, breathe deeply, and focus. You can enhance the experience with essential oils and aromatherapy. (Check out our recommended essential oils for aromatherapy.)

These massages can be repeated throughout the day as often as you like.
